Summary from Volume 1 of the ADV Manga release, "Ahiru is a gawky young girl whose passions are ballet and a certain boy who studies it with her. When her clumsiness hinders her performance, she dreams of the miracle that will transform her into a prima ballerina. A spellbound pendant soon answers her prayers, opening an enchanting world of magic and wishes, where Ahiru is the beautiful and graceful Princess Tutu, and she can capture the attention of her beloved Mytho. The two appeared destined to be together, but cruel fate has other plans..."

As with most serialized manga adaptions, the story of differs greatly from the anime. Focusing more on the ballet side of things rather than the fairy tale elements that appeared in the anime, the manga brings with it a fresh look at the setting of Princess Tutu.

The manga's serialization ran during the duration of the anime's original air date. Both running from August, 2002 to May, 2003. Possibly due to the manga being a monthly release, the plot was much more condensed in comparison to the anime's. There are a number of differences:

  • The manga is left open ended in terms of romance, with both Ahiru and Rue still competing for Mytho's love.
  • Both Ahiru and Rue are given last names: Ahiru Arima and Rue Kuroha
  • The characters are also given ages, which, depending on the character, were younger or older than the official anime show artists intended to portray.
  • Characters absent: The Raven, Drosselmeyer, Uzura, Autor.
  • Two characters sharing similar roles to Pike and Lilie's exist. Their names are Mai and Yuma.
  • Edel takes on the most drastic change in the manga. She is human and the owner of a ballet shop. Her appearance is changed, and in the second volume, she is revealed to be a villain.
